Literacy and Reading
Literacy is the ability to read, write and spell. Reading is the ability to understand meaning from writing. Spelling is the ability to write letters to make words and to express ideas. The ability to read and spell is not something we are born with, and need to be taught - just like riding a bike!
Children require a lot of skills to be successful readers and spellers. Children with speech and language difficulties sometimes experience difficulty with reading and writing.
What Causes Literacy Problems?
Some people may have what is known as Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) that can affect their ability to read or write. Some Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) may be known as the following:
Dyslexia (spelling, reading, rhyming)
Dysgraphia (writing difficulties, reversing letters)
Dyscalculia (problems with maths & numbers)
